How to Relax, When You're Me

What have I been doing with myself for the past two weeks? Now that school's out? Oh not much. Get it? NOT MUCH??? It's not actually a joke, it's just true, and absolutely, deliciously, delightful. Here are some of my favorite (and not-so) things I've been indulging in lately...
My Nook. :)

I'm not a technosavant or whatever you call it. But Darron got me this e-reader for my birthday. It's always nice to have a book under thumb. Of course, I still have to pay for them, so I've been mostly catching up on my Bronte and James and the like, the "freebies". Oh, they're terribly boring you're right, but it's reading, and I love it.

A little spray paint goes a long way. Not literally. No, you always need 4x the amount you thought you would. But it does have the power to transform an ugly orange-brown rattan-and-pine tray into this little lovely...

Yes, I did put the "good magazines" on top. And is the guy on this month's Ensign a dead ringer for Kevin Wright or what? Anyone? Anyone?

Next thing I've been into... the closets. Organizing and chucking. Or, in order, chucking then organizing. I don't have all the matching containers and paper lined walls, but the dust bunnies and mismatched sheets have been banished and turns out, we have plenty of Irish Spring soap. I can take that off my list for 15 years.

Oh yeah. Big boys wear Matchbox cars on their bums. They ain't tighty. They ain't whitey. But they're here to stay. Diapers are soooo 8 days ago. As soon as I finished this picture, he came running over and said "Ok, now I want to see my butt!" And who wouldn't. It's under there somewhere, swimming in a sea of yellow Lambourghini.
(Insert cute picture of scrawny little Tommy in his undies. Darron wisely suggested I take it down.)
Now here's what I haven't been doing much of:

Yeah. I think in the last two weeks, aside from my yoga program, I've watched no tv. The only show I actually still record is "House Hunters International" and I like to save it up for a month and watch a mini-marathon. More satisfying that way. I prefer my fantasies to last a little longer than 23 minutes.

When one organizes one's food storage room and discovers one has the better part of a case of chili that will expire in 4 weeks, and then also a half case of refried beans, one eliminates one's interaction with genteel folk and gets down to the business of eating beans.

Oh and I've taken to parking in the driveway. I don't know. Just cause.

What with all the walking around to the front door, I find I just don't have as much time for housework. Two pots: one for chili, one for oatmeal. I did give them the option. Oh, we're regular. Ve-ry regular.

I'd like to entitle this piece "Mom On Hiatus" and I dedicate it to my unwashed, unkempt, Popsicle-sweetened children. Happy Summer Everyone!

  1. I like the magazine holder. What I don't get is how you can be spray painting, organizing, de-cluttering and potty training and then say that you are on hiatus. It sounds more like you're just taking a TV hiatus, but doing everything else imaginable. Wish I could say the same this week. Hope you have a great summer!

  2. I want a Nook. I want organized closets. I want a big white kitchen. But I ALWAYS park in the garage! Happy summer vacation (I miss those days--now they're ALL up-early-end-late days...)

  3. Hiatus? Looks like one busy chica to me. If that is doing nothing then I am REALLY a slacker! BTW love the magazine rack... can you come decorate my house? I need help, and lots of it. BTW #2: What happened to your garage, I have driven by your home about 23 times on my way out and about and keep pausing to think of what scenario caused it.

  4. I am mostly impressed by the potty training! And that your kitchen looks so great even when on a hiatus. Mine looks like a bomb exploded in it on a daily basis.

And I don't think those books were boring. :-)

  5. Tommy looks so grown up! When did he turn into a KID? Long, skinny legs, losing his cheeks (on his face), when did this happen? It hasn't been that long since I saw him last, or has it? And why was potty training so easy for you? What was your secret?
Also: I love the new blue tray. And I spotted some new chairs that I love too. And I want you to organize my house. Pretty please.

  8. And I have been reading all the free books too. Pride and Prejudice. Yawn. Sorry Jaz. However. It's a freebee. To be fair to Christian I hooked my reader up to my secret little stash of Susie cash. I don't have a shopping addiction unless you count books. Which- adds up very fast. Especially if you read fast. Not good. Oh this will be the end of me, the kid's breakfast (although I could just serve chili) and my bank account. Hey! It's summer!

  9. Susie! I'm shocked! Pride and Prejudice boring? I shudder at the thought!! But I'm a rather boring person, so I probably like boring books. ;-)

  10. First of all, after a wham bam full to the brim school year, doing all these tiny little projects is really my way of unwinding. I have big projects I want to do too, but they really probably won't get done. But something that takes a half hour? That can hold my attention.

And hold on now. Pride and Prejudice is NOT boring. I just cannot have that hanging out there on my blog.

  11. In agreement... P&P is so far from boring. Classically classic and fantastic!

  12. The guy on the Ensign cover totally looks like Kevin Wright. I thought the same thing when I first saw it.
I love the color of your painted tray.
WHAT happened to your garage door?
Ooh, what yummy thing is on the beans in your pantry?
You need to send the picture of Tommy in his Lambourghini underwear to Wyatt. I think he could train himself if he got to wear a pair of those! So cool. Tommy looks so big! Is he totally potty trained?
We need to find a back splash for your kitchen. I volunteer to help pick it out and dad to install it.
    Love you.

  13. I knew the day I said that out loud I'd be cracked over the head.

  14. And who said boring? Wasn't me.....

  15. Um, that sounds pretty busy to me. I love the tray and all the organizing going on. I need to do some more of that. I love House Hunters International too! We don't have HGTV, but everytime we stay somewhere that has it, we can't turn it off. I guess it's good we don't have it or there would be even less organizing going on around here. Happy Summer!

  16. So your spotless, gorgeous kitchen just, ahem, HAPPENS? Come on over to the Faulkners, Heath. I'll show you a REAL mess.

  17. I realized after I saw the pic of my kitchen on the blog, that it didn't photograph as messy as it was. All you can see is glowing white with all the light from the window coming in making it look a lot cleaner than it is. But I wasn't about to go out and take another one and go through the hassle again. I should have done a close up of the cereal and oatmeal and chili bowls. Mmmm.... chili...*gag* 11 cans to go.

  18. Sounds relaxing to me. Reading + little projects = happy mama.

Unfortunately the little projects seem to always turn into H U G E projects (at least according to my husband), which is why it's much safer to just take a nap.

I'm bummed that there's no undies shot. Get it? BUM-MED?? I'll be here all week, folks...

  19. My kids just got out of school yesterday. I'm hoping that when I meet the two week mark that you're at, I'll accomplish as much as you! Geez! I just get lazy in the summer and take lots of trips to the pool to tire out the kiddos.
